Bloomington, IN – Music Director Position

United Presbyterian Church of Bloomington (UPC) is seeking a Music Director to become an integral part of a small, loving and diverse congregation within walking distance of the Jacobs School of Music (IU Campus).

The Music Director is an important ministry as it relates to United Presbyterian’s worship, fellowship and growth. The purpose of the UPC Music Director position is to facilitate an atmosphere in which God is worshiped and glorified and to contribute to the music ministry of the Church by playing the piano/organ, directing the choir, coordinating the guest artist program and student singer program for worship services, and overseeing maintenance of the church’s instruments.

A bachelor’s degree in keyboard performance, choral conducting, music education, or equivalent experience in a Christian church is preferred. The candidate must be proficient in both organ and piano and should have some vocal or choir experience. A basic understanding of how religious music is utilized and performed in a church setting is required. Candidate must be available for 10:00 AM Sunday morning services and Tuesday evening services during Lent and Advent as well as for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Christmas Eve services The Music Director will work closely and cooperatively with the UPC Worship Team and the pastor to select all aspects of the music for each of these services. The Music Director duties include accompanying those guest artists who require an accompanist. The UPC Chancel Choir performs from mid-September through the end of May, approximately 30-32 Sundays per year. During the UPC Chancel Choir’s performance season, the Music Director will schedule one rehearsal each week not to exceed one hour in length.

The instruments available are an Allen electronic organ and a Broadman grand piano.

Time expectation for this position is approximately 5-10 hours per week. Salary is $9,500 per year and will be paid monthly.
